The week before, the visibly huge black colt had aced the tracks over at Green Horse Fields, breaking his maiden impressively in the Unicorn Horn Juvenile Turf. The colt was incredibly fit and more than ready to step up to his next challenge where he would race over the dirt for the first time, but that wouldn’t stop the colt from doing what he loved. Coming out of the race, his fitness level was through the rough and he was full of energy and this wasn’t stopping him in his six horse field at The Wire over the dirt in a ten furlong race for two year old colts. Eavesdropper would be having a light breeze over the dirt today. They didn’t want anything strenuous set in place for the colt just yet as he needed to be fully rested and trained up well if he was going to keep collecting the wins to his name.
The colt looked like a serious contender for next years Triple Crown, or even the Turf Triple Crown – the amount of top turf youngsters that were coming out onto the tracks at the minute were amazing, and even people who saw the colt knew he was going to be a good one. He was from unknown bloodlines and little was known about where he was born. The only thing that remained on his passport was ‘100% thoroughbred’ and that he was born January 2nd in Y12. Rave was a true blue dual surfaced colt. He would race over both surfaces and he would become very successful in what he did with the right frame of mind.
Erin had tacked the colt up and lead him out onto the yard. Jacey legged her up onto the large colt, who was already 17 hands high as a two year old. It was phenomenal. After walking the colt through the yard, his ears perked up as he came over to the dirt track. The colt wasn’t fazed by anything, infact it was a good thing that he was practically bombproof. He would never spook at anything, it was like he’d done it all before even though he hadn’t. His training rota was fairly simple. He would train once every week as with high fitness it’s very easy to keep the horses fit. Somedays he’d even go for a swim, fairly simply saying that he was a very subtle colt with a lot of bone.
When he walked out onto the dirt, the echoing sound of a whinny lit up the track. The light cloud cover meant it seemed a bit dull, with the sun weaving in and out of the clouds during the right frame of mind. With the colts ears perked, Erin turned him in a few circles and warmed him up. The heat of spring made it feel humid but it was taken away slightly by the small breeze that blew through the air, rustling the trees around the edges of the track. Jacey looked over at Erin and held up her hand to give her the thumbs up. ”Five furlongs!” she shouted to the small jockey, who nodded and gave her the thumbs up back.
The sturdy colt set on his way round the track. His ears were pricked and his head was held high. He was long and his stride covered the dirt with immense speed and power when he really put his mind to it. As they set off at a canter, Erin began to loosen him up a bit. They came down to the six furlong pole and she crouched down. As the five approached, she let him go, and without hesitation, the colt leapt forward jumping into a lovely stride and taking to the dirt like he was a six year old that had been doing this for years. Erin grinned and let the big colt run, his long stride covered the surface in amazing fashion.
As they rounded the bend, Erin bit her lip. She knew her colt was strong enough and she knew she couldn’t push him as she didn’t want to tire him but she let him breeze and he took off amazingly. Jacey smiled from the stand side and watched as the black figures emerged from the top of the stretch. She let him run, shaking the reins to tell him. ”This is your time, boy. Go for it.” She let the colt go, and didn’t shake the reins, but he took off in amazing fashion. Erin grinned and as they galloped swiftly over the line, she knew that he was more than ready for this. ”Come on Rave, let’s go make you a star.”
